My Literacy moment came from the summer of 1999 when I was 4 years old heading to San Antonio Texas to spend time with my Aunt Terrie. She would enlighten me on how to read. She taught me how to understand words and make sense of them as I read. She also taught me how to tie my shoe. She lived in a large white home in the suburbs of San Antonio Texas. We would make flashcards to memorize words.Practiced everyday at the study table she had in her home, she actually built a learning center inside her home to educate kids. The first book I ever read  from start to finish was “where the wild things are” by Maurice Sendak. Aunt Terrie was a middle aged woman with a wardrobe of skirts and a traditional, very structured way of living. This literacy moment is of importance to me because she taught me the basics, she built the foundation of reading for me which I use everyday in my life. She was the starting point in my academic career and for that reason is why I am choosing to write my literacy moment about her. It’s crucial to my life because without being able to read you can’t function and be successful in the educated life I strive for.
